A new study has found that the most common side effects of a class of prescription drugs, Viagra, can be reduced by about 10 to 25 percent.
But the findings of the study are based on more than a million people in the U. S. who had been taking a drug for at least one year.
Researchers found that the drug sildenafil, which is used to treat erectile dysfunction, was the most commonly prescribed drug in the U. S., up from just five in 2006.
The new study found that the drug, which is sold under the brand name Revatio, was not more common than the other drugs used to treat heart problems in men.
In fact, the drug sildenafil was the least common, at about two percent of the total prescriptions made by men in the U. last year.
However, the number of prescriptions that men were given was even lower.
"Our study shows that the most common side effects of prescription drugs were mild, although the drug sildenafil was more common, even at the highest doses," said study author Dr. Steven Nissen, a senior research fellow at the University of Texas Southwestern. "That's because the FDA has not approved any other class of drugs to treat erectile dysfunction."
The research team used real-life examples and found that men taking Revatio, Viagra and Cialis were less likely to have the problem.
